Recital Quartet...

Bath Spa Recital Quartet was formed in 2005, specifically to give public performances that explore the more serious string quartet repertoire. The quartet exclusively features Jamie, Sue, Michelle and Beth, who are professional musicians and postgraduates of the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama in Cardiff. When working towards more formal concerts these four musicians work closely together on a programme of music discussed with the client. Working as a quartet in this way, adds a quality and intimacy to the performance.

Our past public performances have included a charity concert in aid of the National Osteoporosis Society, performing works by Borodin, Dvorak and Mendelssohn, an invitation from Andrew Hooker to give a private concert for members of the Rode Chamber Music Club, performing major string quartet works by Mozart and Debussy, a performance for a lunchtime recital as part of Keynsham Music Festival and slots at the opening night of the Bath International Music Festival in each successive year from May 2007 onwards. Bath Spa Recital Quartet are actively seeking performance opportunities for 2011.

Principal Violin
JamieJamie enjoys a varied musical life which includes performing, composing, recording and teaching. He began studying the violin at the age of four with Sue Thomas, and as a child he played on the BBC television programme Record Breakers and was selected to travel to Japan to play in a series of concerts for the 1998 winter Olympics. He was a chorister at Hampton Court Chapel Royal before going on to study the violin with Esta Boda-Katona at the Royal College of Music’s junior department. He then studied under Marius Bedeschi at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff where he won numerous competitions including prizes for unaccompanied Bach, Paganini and chamber music. He graduated in 2007 with first class honours before gaining a scholarship to complete a post-graduate diploma for which he was awarded a distinction and achieved the highest mark of his year group. Whilst at the college he formed the pop/folk group ‘The Toy Band’ with three other students with which he writes songs, sings and plays guitar. They frequently perform in London venues and have now released two singles with New York based label Boy Scout Recordings. In 2007 Jamie was appointed as a violin teacher and chamber music coach at the RWCMD’s junior department and since 2008 has also been teaching in the college’s senior department. He now lives in Bath where he teaches privately while continuing to freelance as a chamber musician.

Sue is an experienced violinist and has played in many orchestras in the local area, including the Gloucestershire Symphony, Cheltenham Philharmonia, Bath Symphony and the Amadeus Orchestra. She currently leads the Frome Festival Orchestra. Sue has studied violin and viola under Adrian Eales and Lorna Osbon and gives regular quartet recitals. She achieved a First in her solo recital, performing works by Messian and Janacek in her Degree finals. In July 2009 Sue completed her Postgraduate Diploma in Performance studying with Yu Yasuroaka at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.

MichelleMichelle began studying the violin when she was seven, her principal teachers being Joan Schmeising of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and Richard White of Bath Baroque. During 1989 Michelle joined the Southampton Youth Orchestra and had the opportunity to tour extensively abroad, as well as perform in the major London concert halls. In 1994 she moved to Bath to study for a degree at Bath College of Higher Education. Since then she has performed regularly with a variety of ensembles in Bath and Bristol, including Bath Baroque and Bath Philharmonia and in 1998 she founded the Bath Spa String Quartet, a group which provides music for weddings and other events. Michelle has built a successful career as a string teacher and performer, and often gives recitals as a member of the Bath Spa Recital Quartet. Orchestral work has included recent tours to France with Hampshire Sinfonietta and a concert with ‘The Priests’ at the Cadogan Hall in London. Michelle completed a postgraduate course at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama under the tutelage of John Stein and Lucy Gould and then converted to the viola in June 2009. She is continuing viola lessons with Martin Humbey of the Academy of St Martin in the Fields.

BethanyBethany graduated from Bath Spa University College in 2003 with a degree in Dance & Music, where she studied cello with Ruth Zagni. Since then she has integrated into the local music scene, playing with Bath and Frome Symphony Orchestras and various quartets and chamber ensembles. Beth also has a passion for improvising and applies this to many genres of music. She plays regularly at Bath traditional folk music sessions, as well as with singer/songwriters such as Jane Taylor and Rob Sharpels. Beth occasionally plays cello for Radio 2 Folk Award winners “Bellowhead” and has a residency in a Bristol Restaurant with Lebanese composer/guitarist/pianist, Nizar Hussayni. She has recorded for many artists involving sessions at Moles Studio, Bath and Realworld Studios, Box. When Beth returns to her home county of Warwickshire, she sings and plays cello and recorder in her own family band, covering material form Blues and Jazz to roots/folk rock, Eastern European and classical.

Fees for the Recital Quartet are based on a concert programme of up to a maximum of 90 minutes music. When requesting new repertoire to be learnt, clients can also expect to contribute towards the costs of rehearsal time. The Recital Quartet can only be booked if Jamie, Sue, Michelle and Beth are all available for your event date. Because a Recital Quartet booking will supersede any other work for the musicians involved, please note that there is an additional surcharge for booking the Recital Quartet. If you are interested in hiring the Bath Spa Recital Quartet for your Music Festival, Concert or Event, please mention this when you make your enquiry.
