News 2007

We have been busy again this year, having played at one hundred and thirty weddings and events over the last 12 months. It has been a delight to gain some repeat business from previous clients and we have also had bookings on the strength of recommendations from friends of our past wedding couples.

Concerts
It has been an exciting time for Bath Spa Recital Quartet, as we performed at three major events in 2007. We were invited to play for the opening night of Bath International Music Festival in May, followed by a lunchtime concert at the Keynsham Music Festival in July and our first major private concert for Andrew Hooker in August 2007 at his church in Rode, where we performed Mozart’s Dissonance quartet and the Debussy String Quartet in G minor. The August concert was the culmination of an eight month demanding rehearsal schedule. We were very privileged to have the opportunity of coaching sessions with former Professor of Chamber Music at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, Judith Young. Her sessions were truly inspirational and without her help the concert would not have been what it was. As a result, we look forward to going from strength to strength.

Workshops
Looking ahead to 2008, we are hoping to roll out our educational workshops to the local primary schools and further a field as required. Our workshop team will include Michelle, Sheila, Beth and Sue and we have been working hard to pool ideas for some original and entertaining education programmes. All of our team have a background in education as well as performing. Our workshops will be class-based projects focusing on the key elements of Key Stages 1 & 2. Workshops will be 45 - 50 minutes long for each class of children and their teacher. In return for some feedback on our work, we are looking for two primary schools who would be interested in piloting our workshop for free. If you are interested in taking part, please get in touch with us. Further workshops will be charged per 50 minute unit and we will initially have the option of providing a String Quartet or String Trio. We are happy to discuss and adapt programmes of work to suit the needs of each school, so if you have a particular Arts project in mind, we are sure we can accommodate you.

Wedding Fairs
Wedding Fairs are a great time to come and see us play live. In our busy schedule it is often difficult to fit in all our music planning sessions individually with our clients, so if you can make it to one of our wedding fair performances, you can often get the benefit of hearing the whole quartet. It is also a great opportunity for us to demonstrate live samples and for you to chat to us about any music choices you wish to make for your event. Check this page regularly for up to date details of events where you can hear us. If you would specifically like to come along to listen to the quartet, please get in touch with us prior to the event; as the musicians attend many Wedding Fairs throughout the year on a voluntary basis, we regret that it is not always possible to provide music for every promotional event.

News 2006

Concerts
2006 has seen Bath Spa String Quartet giving two public concerts, with their own charity concert organised in January 2006, performing Borodin String Quartet No 2, Dvorak “American” Quartet, Kodaly Duo for Violin and Cello and the Mendelssohn Octet. This was followed in June, with an invitation to play at the Langford Music Festival, where the quartet performed a gala concert of “Classical Music Through The Ages” with popular works ranging from Bach, Vivaldi and Pachelbel to Schubert, Faurè and Shostakovitch.

In light of the success of these two performances, Bath Spa musicians have formed a special recital quartet specifically to give public performances that explore the more serious string quartet repertoire. The quartet features Michelle, Sue, Sheila and Kate. We are currently planning a concert for summer, 2007 where we have been invited to perform for Andrew Hooker Violins at his home in Rode, just outside of Bath.

Film Stars!
2006 has also seen our male members of the quartet being involved in the filming of ITV’s production of Jane Austen’s ‘Persuasion’, due to be screened in January 2007. The quartet were asked to perform the fourth movement of Mozart’s ‘Dissonance’ quartet. Our cellist, Kate, was also involved as the piano hand double for the leading actress, so watch carefully! See below for embarrassing photos of the boys! And Sue has been filming in Cardiff for ‘Doctor Who’, but confesses that unfortunately there was no playing involved, just some convincing (she hopes!) miming!

Educational Live Music Workshops
In October 2006, Bath Spa String Quartet gave their first educational music workshop, featuring Sheila, Sue and Kate in a Baroque String Trio, which we were asked to form for the Blue Coat Primary School Arts week project. The children’s work for the week was based on the painting in the National Gallery, entitled "Two Boys and a Girl Making Music", Click here to see "Two Boys and a Girl Making Music". Our group presented contemporary music from the period, weaving a ‘mystery story’ for the pupils to discover what types of music they thought the children in the painting were playing. The workshop was well received and the children were kept actively engaged in answering questions and listening out for things in the music. The children were also able to see the differences in Baroque to modern instruments as we took along some Baroque bows and talked about how the violins and cellos have changed over the centuries. The three hundred and twenty children were kept enthralled, write down to the littlest infants!

Dear Michelle,
Thank you so much for helping to make the start to our Art week so exciting. The children loved listening to the music, finding out about the instruments and what music was popular in 1629. Please thank all 3 of your musicians for an excellent performance.
Wishing you all the best, Kate Tutty Blue Coat CE Primary School, Wotton-under-Edge

It was such a success we are thinking of performing for schools on a more regular basis, so if you have a music education project in mind, please let us know. We are happy to tailor programmes to your specification and can work with children in small groups or give whole school presentations as required. We are adept at communicating well with children, as many of the Bath Spa musicians have worked in the educational field.

Session Work
Bath Spa String Quartet have been providing session musicians for various projects this year. Michelle and Kate have recorded for the Sine Star Project in Southampton, which is a Rock album due to be released in Summer 2007. Kate is now a member of a band and is doing regular gigs in London and recording sessions for singer/songwriter Phil King. And Sheila and Beth have also been involved with session work this year. Musicians are available for hire to individuals or studios. We can also offer music notation services, if you would like your songs transcribed to sheet music. Please contact us for further information.
